CROSS LANES – Tug Valley improved to 2-0 on the season as they ran past Cross Lanes Christian 79 to 30 on the road Friday night.

Senior all-state candidates Mikey Newsome and Austin Brewer led the way for the Panthers. Newsome fired in 21 points, while Brewer hit for 16 points, handed out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds. They were both taken out of the game at the end of the third quarter and did not play in the final period.

Thomas Baisden added eight points and nine rebounds for coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson. Josh White also scored eight, Ethan Hager six and Corey Dillon six. Hayden Sturgell had four points, but also handed out five assists.

Several players got to see action and got into the scoring column for the Panthers.

Tug Valley hit 7-19 3-pointers for 37 percent and they were 35-75 from the floor for 47 percent in the game. The Panthers only went to the free throw line four times and hit two of those.

Tyler Corbin led Cross Lanes Christian with 18 points. Cross Lanes only hit 7-19 from the floor for 37 percent.

The Panthers played Westside Saturday night in their first home game of the season. Because of press deadlines, that game story will be in Tuesday’s edition of the Williamson Daily News. They won’t play again until December 29 in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry.

Cross Lanes tops Lady Panthers

CROSS LANES – Tug Valley’s Lady Panthers didn’t fare as well as the boys did at Cross Lanes Christian on Friday night. They lost their first game of the year 45 to 37.

CLC took a 17-3 lead after one quarter of play, but the Lady Panthers battled back to outscore the home team 14-5 in the second frame to cut the lead to 22-17.

Cross Lanes outscored Tug Valley 23-20 in the second half to pull out the win.

Courtney Kendrick led CLC with 25 points. Laura Jones added nine for the home team.

Adreanna Vance led Tug Valley with 12 points, while Hannah Armstrong chipped in nine and Amber Linville seven. Linville hauled in 13 rebounds for the Lady Panthers of coach Okey smith. Vance dished out three assists and had five rebounds.

Tug Valley, now 3-1, will travel to take on Mingo Central on Monday night.
