CANADA, Ky. — A woman escaped serious injury after striking an elk on U.S. 119 Wednesday evening.

According to Kentucky State Trooper Jeremy Giles, 74-year-old Vina Varney, of Ransom, was traveling south about a half mile from the Bent Branch exit when several elk ran out in front of her vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Rav4.

Varney struck one of the animals, causing severe damage to the front of her car. Although she did not appear to be seriously injured, she was transported to Pikeville Medical Center as a precautionary measure.

No citations were issued at the scene.
