May, Newsome among state leaders

WHEELING - The final regular season state high school football leaders, compiled by Doug Huff, secretary-treasurer of the W. Va. Sports Writers Association has been released.

Senior Joe May of Mingo Central was 12th in scoring with 122 points. May, a halfback, rushed for over 1,200 yards this season and scored 18 touchdowns. He also had several 2-point conversions. The speedy May was a multi-threat on offense. He ran the ball, caught passes and also returned punts and kickoffs. His all-purpose yardage was well over 1,500 yards.

Mikey Newsome, a senior quarterback for Tug Valley, was tied for 7th in the state for touchdown passes with 17. Newsome threw for 1,350 yards this season. He had close to a 50 percent completion percentage. He only had two interceptions in the first 10 games. He also tossed a TD pass in the first round of the playoffs leaving him with 18 for the season.
