CLARKSBURG (AP) — A sophomore at Lincoln High school is fighting bacterial meningitis a week after a freshman at West Virginia University died from the same infection.

Harrison County Schools Superintendent Susan Collins said Thursday that the teenager”s family says the girl was responding well to treatment at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

County health officials spent Wednesday educating her classmates about the potentially deadly infection and what to do if they become feverish and suffer from a headache, nausea, vomiting and a stiff neck. More severe symptoms include confusion and seizures.

Meningitis spreads by human saliva or mucous.

Chelsea Kanatus, a 19-year-old college WVU freshman from Virginia, died March 2.
