PAINTSVILLE, Ky. – Belfry finished out the regular season last Friday with a 17-12 road victory over Class 4A Johnson Central.
The hard-fought contest was low scoring and hard-hitting between two of eastern Kentucky’s top programs.
Belfry took the lead in the first quarter as junior Trinity Carr scored on a 2-yard carry. Carr kicked the extra point to give the Pirates an early 7-0 lead.
Johnson Central’s Josh Dillon broke free and scored on a 90 yard run. The 2-point conversion pass was no good and Belfry kept the 7-6 lead.
Belfry’s next score was a 12-yard field goal kick by Carr. This gave the Pirates a 10-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
Neither team scored in the next two quarters.
Belfry got some insurance in the fourth quarter when senior Josh Robinson scored on a 7-yard carry. Carr’s extra point kick was good to make it 17-6.
Johnson Central’s Zach Gound scored on a 46-yard carry. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.
Belfry was led in defense by senior linebacker Madison Ghormley with 11 total tackles.
The Pirates had 277 total yards of offense, 157 on the ground and 120 through the air.
With the win, Coach Philip Haywood’s Belfry squad finished the regular season with a record of 8-2 on the season. The Pirates will host to Knott County Central from Hindman, Ky. Friday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs in Kentucky.
The Patriots come into CAM Stadium with a 2-8 mark.
Knott Central lost 46-32 in their recent game against Allen Central.
With the loss, Johnson Central moves to 8-2 on the season. Coach Jim Matney’s squad will host Harrison County on Friday in the first round of the 4A playoffs.
