West Virginia’s back to back embarrassing losses have Mountaineer fans in a foul mood.

The two losses – on the road at Texas Tech and at home this past weekend to Kansas State – have seen WVU make a nose dive, spiraling downward in the national rankings. Before the two beat downs, WVU had climbed to No. 4 and No. 5, depending on which poll you read.

But the horrendous defense finally caught up with WVU (5-2), head coach Dana Holgorsen and his defensive coordinator Joe Deforest. Now the offense, which was the talk of the land, has only scored 14 points in each of the last two games.

After the latest lopsided loss by the Mountaineers on Saturday night, the Mountaineers were still able to stay in the top 25. But they have dropped.

WVU, fifth in The Associated Press poll two weeks ago and 17th last week, is now No. 25 following a 55-14 loss to Kansas State. The Mountaineers are No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches poll. They are 19 in the BCS standings.

WVU has a much-needed bye week coming up. They need to regroup and make some big changes in the next few days.

Alabama has run its streak of weeks at No. 1 in the AP poll to eight, the longest stay atop the rankings by the Crimson Tide.

In the meantime, Marshall fans are happy after they had a big 59-24 road win over Southern Miss on Saturday night. Marshall is now 3-4 for the season and 2-1 in Conference USA.

The Herd will be back in Huntington this week hosting Central Florida.

Meanwhile, UK fans can’t wait for basketball season as the Wildcats lost to Georgia 29-24. However, that was a good outing by the Kentucky football team. Unfortunately they take on Florida this weekend in the Sunshine State. The Gators are 7-0 and ranked No. 2 or No. 3 in the country, depending on which poll you look at.

Friday Night Spotlight for high school players:

Belfry’s Sani Warren ran for a touchdown and threw for a pair of scores in the Pirates big district win over Pike Central. Senior tailback Josh Robinson also scored a pair of TDs for Belfry.

Mingo Central’s Joe May rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown in the Miner’s loss to Logan on Friday night.

Tug Valley was idle this past weekend.
