After eight weeks of play, both Mingo Central and Tug Valley are ranked in the top 16 in their respective classes in West Virginia.
The top 16 teams in each class make the playoffs in the Mountain State.
Mingo Central is now 4-3 on the season and fell to No. 13 this week in Class 2A. Tug Valley is 6-2 and is ranked No. 13 in Class A.
The Miners need to win at least 2-of-3 of their last games, while Tug Valley probably needs to win their last two contests to get into the post season.
The strength of schedule helps a team’s ranking because of the point system.
Mingo Central will travel to Logan this Friday and a win over the Wildcats could get them Triple AAA bonus points. The Miners will then finish out the season with a road game at Nicholas County, currently ranked No. 12, and a home game with Herbert Hoover, a Class 3A school on November 2.
Tug Valley has its bye week, but will travel to Man next week and end the regular season with a home game with Clay County on November 2.
Other teams in the region that are ranked this week are Logan at No. 18 in Class 3A, Westside at No. 19 and Wyoming East No. 9 in Class 2A. Chapmanville has a record of 4-3 and is at No. 18 this week, while River View comes in at No. 20.
Scott comes in at No. 6 this week, while Wayne, the defending Double A champs, are ranked No. 1, followed by Bridgeport at No. 2.
Man is hoping to finish at 5-5 this season. That would give them an outside chance of making the Class A playoffs. A victory next week over Tug Valley could help their chances. With the six wins the Panther have, it would give the Hillbillies much-needed bonus points.
The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs starting Friday, Nov. 9.
