Westside outscores Tug Valley

CLEAR FORK – Tug Valley made a valiant, hard-fought effort in its Friday night game against Westside played at Clear Fork in Wyoming County. However, the Panthers came up short 34-30.
Tug Valley trailed scored 22 points in the final quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump losing to the Renegades.
The Panthers struck first in the game as senior signal caller Mikey Newsome hooked up with senior tight end Corey Dillon on a 5-yard TD pass. Newsome’s pass to Aaron Muncy for the 2-point conversion gave TVHS and early 8-0 lead with 3:10 left in the first quarter.
Neither team scored in the second quarter and the Panthers took the lead into the dressing room at the half.
Westside got its first lead with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter as Mike Mullens scored on a 30-yard run. The conversion pass failed, so Tug Valley kept the lead at 8-6.
The Renegades took their first lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter as Justin Cogar hit pay-dirt from two yards out. The run failed, but Westside took a 12-8 lead.
In the final quarter, Newsome once again hooked up with Dillon on a 20-yard pass. The conversion pass failed, but the Panther regained the lead at the 9:18 mark of the fourth quarter at 14-12.
Westside took the lead with 8:54 remaining in the contest as Mike Mullens scored on a 41-yard run. The conversion run was stopped, but the home team took an 18-14 advantage.
With 5:40 left in the game, Tug Valley’s David Runyon scored from two yards out. Newsome hit Austin Baisden with the conversion pass to give his team a 22-18 lead.
The lead continued to see-saw back and forth. This time it was Westside scoring with 5:14 left in the final quarter. Mullens scored on a 10-yard run. Cogar connected with Mathew Harless for the 2-point conversion pass to make it 26-22 Westside.
A short time later, with 5:02 left in the game, Westside’s Mullens scored on a nice 22-yard run. Cogar’s pass to Corey Bowles for the 2-point conversion gave the Renegades a 34-22 lead.
Tug Valley fought back and with 2:04 left in the game Newsome connected with Tyler Conley for a 21-yard TD pass. Conley’s conversion run cut the lead to 34-30.
Time ran out for the Panthers and they lost only their second game of the season and saw their record drop to 5-2.
Tug Valley had 412 yards of total offense, 263 yards on the ground and 149 through the air. The Panthers were only penalized twice for 20 yards.
Westside rolled up 367 yards in the game, 244 rushing and 123 passing. The Renegades were flagged six times for 70 yards.
Runyon led Tug Valley with 22 yards on 15 carries and scored one TD. Muncy carried the ball 21 times for 85 yards, while Justin Baisden had 17 carries for 50 yards. The receiving yards saw Dillon catch seven passes for 67 yards and a pair of TDs, while Muncy caught two balls for 33 yards. Baisden had one reception for 28 yards and Conley one catch for 21 yards.
Newsome was 11-for-28 passing for 149 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
On defense Ryan Preece and Conley each had seven tackles, while Isaac Parsley and Dillon each had six stops.
