Panthers travel to Westside
The Tug Valley Panthers will travel to Wyoming County to take on Westside Friday night and they hope to continue their winning ways.
Tug Valley is 5-1 this season and is currently ranked No. 10 in the Class 1A playoff race in the Mountain State.
The Class 2A Renegades come into the contest with a 3-3 record and own wins over Wyoming East, Man and Independence. They have lost to Liberty (Raleigh), Mingo Central and to No. ranked Scott last week by a score of 37-12.
The Panthers of head coach Tony Clusky have wins over Sherman, Mt. View, Twin Valley, Va., Tolsia and Hannan. The only blemish on Tug Valley’s record is Meadow Bridge.
“This is another big game for us,” Clusky said. “We’ve got to have the same effort we had against Tolsia. We have to play solid and have some dicipline on defense.”
Westside is led by sophomore quarterback Justin Cogar and senior running back Dylan Newsome. The Renegades return several starters from last year, especially along the line. They are coached by Darren Thomas.
The Renegades are not afraid to pass the football and at times will run the spread offense. They have some good speed and can also run the football behind their big offensive line.
Tug Valley is led by senior signal caller Mikey Newsome who has thrown for 743 yards and is completing over 51 percent of his passes. He has completed nine passes for touchdowns so far this season with only two interceptions.
Muncy, a senior running back, leads the attack and is a threat to score either rushing or catching the ball out of the backfield. Jessie Mays and David Runyon are also tough to handle out of the Panther offensive backfield. Baisden will see action too.
Muncy, senior tight end Corey Dillon, Mays, Runyon and Ryan Preece have been on the receiving end of many of Newsome’s passes.
Big senior defensive end Isaac Parsley and junior Thomas Baisden lead the defense in tackles this season for Tug Valley. Parsley has six QB sacks so far this season.
