HUNTINGTON (AP) — A Huntington police officer was hospitalized Wednesday after allegedly being shot by an armed robbery suspect, police and hospital officials said.

Patrolman 1st Class Ryan Bentley was shot in the leg and neck at 1:17 a.m. while pursuing the 19-year-old suspect in an alley, said Police Chief Skip Holbrook.

Bentley was in fair condition Wednesday at Cabell Huntington Hospital, hospital spokesman Charles Shumaker said.

Bentley had approached a group of people and was told by one of them that a robbery had taken place. Bentley pursued the suspect, who turned and fired shots, Holbrook said.

Bentley recognized the suspect from previous run-ins and provided other officers with information. As many as 40 police officers spread out over eight square blocks and Anthony Demonde Jennings of Huntington was arrested four hours later at a city residence, Holbrook said.

Cabell County Magistrate Court records show Jennings was arraigned on charges of attempted first-degree murder on a police officer and two counts of first-degree robbery. Jennings is being held in the Western Regional Jail on $2 million bond.

Officials at the county prosecutor’s office and the jail said they didn’t know whether Jennings had an attorney.
