Cardinals outscore Pikeville

INEZ, Ky. – Sheldon Clark jumped out to a 18-0 win in the first quarter over visiting Pikeville, but fell behind 27-18 by halftime.
But the Cardinals got their offense back into gear in the second half to defeat the Panthers 48-34 to win their homecoming game Friday night.
In the 1st quarter, SCHS got a pair of touchdowns from Tyler O’ Connor and one from Chase Lafferty for the early 18 – 0 lead.
However, the second quarter was all Pikeville.
Austin Black scored on a 22 yard interception return. The PAT was good making it 18 – 7.
Pikeville’s Austin Charles connected with Cody Estep on a 78 yard pass and catch. The conversion kick was good, cutting the lead to 18 - 14 with 4:15 left in the half.
Charles hit Estep again for a 16 yard TD pass. The PAT was good with :38 left in the second quarter.
Pikeville’s Estep then picked off a Bryce Workman pass and returned it 63 yards for touchdown as time ran out. The PAT was no good, but at halftime Pikeville led SCHS 27 – 18.
In the 3rd quarter, Butcher scored on a 6-yard run. Lafferty ran in for the 2-point conversion at the 6:46 mark.
After a Pikeville punt, Lafferty returned a punt 68 yards for TD. Butcher’s 2-point conversion gave the Cardinals the lead 34 – 27.
But, Pikeville wasn’t through as Chase Hall hit paydirt on a 1-yard dive play. The PAT was good and that tied the game at 34 – 34.
Sheldon Clark got the winning touchdown as Workman connected with Austin Preece for a 20-yard touchdown pass and catch. Lafferty’s conversion made it 42- 34.
The Cards added some insurance as O’ Connor raced into the end zone from 32 yards out with 9:50 left in the game. The conversion failed, but from that point SCHS held on for the 48- 34 victory.
O’ Connor ran the ball 17 times for 146 yards three TDs. Butcher had 7 carries for 110 yards and a score, while Lafferty had 68 yards on 13 tries and a rushing TD.
Workman was 5 of 11 passing for 79 yards, one TD and one pick.
Receiving for SCHS O’ Connor had 3 catches for 74 yards.
For Pikeville, Chase Hall had 13 carries for 72 yards.
SCHS is now 3 - 1 and will travel to Perry Central this Friday.
