WILLIAMSON – The final plans for the 1st annual Coalfield Baseball Reunion have been made.
The event will be held Monday, September 3, Labor Day, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Williamson Fire Department.
Tom Varney, who is organizing the reunion, has added several speakers and items to the agenda. Williamson civic leader Mae Stallard will give the benediction and the welcome address will be given by Williamson Mayor Darrin McCormick.
The featured speaker will be former professional baseball player Danny Godby of Chapmanville. Godby played for the Reds, Cardinals and Red Sox organizations. He also served as a Reds scout for many years.
Varney said several awards will be presented at the Coalfield Baseball Reunion including one for the oldest living manager Amos Murphy.
The awards will be presented by Varney, Ireland Smith, Bob Hatfield and Jim Whitt.
Varney expects a good crowd and said he has been contacted by many fans of the old baseball league. He said former players and/or their family members will be attending the event. Family members and fans are encouraged to bring old photos, newspaper clippings and any memorabilia from the leagues.
Refreshments will be served at the event, which is free to all those who attend. Varney said he has another new sponsor, Guardco of Belfry, Ky. Other sponsors are Pepsi of Logan and Williamson Memorial Hospital.
Final remarks will be made by Varney and a closing prayer will be done by Smith.
