WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Jay Rockefeller announced that the first installment of federal funds to help strengthen the Medicaid safety-net for hundreds of thousands of West Virginia families arrived Wednesday.  West Virginia’s Medicaid program is eligible to receive $76,479,599 in federal funds as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that was recently signed into law by President Barrack Obama.

Medicaid is a federal-state partnership aimed at making sure families on fixed incomes, the disabled, children, and pregnant women have access to health care.  In West Virginia, the federal government already pays 73.7 percent of the health care costs for Medicaid enrollees – under the Rockefeller-provision, that would increase temporarily to 79.9 percent.

West Virginia will receive additional payments soon.  It’s estimated that the state could receive nearly $450 million in federal funding over the next two years to help meet growing enrollment needs in Medicaid.
