Mingo Central High School is having a kick-off to welcome students back for the 2012-13 school year.
The Back-to-School Bash/GEAR UP Kick-off will be held at the school Thursday, August 16, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Vice Principal Marcella Charles said there would be informational booths set up for parents. When parents visit the booths, they can pick up a ticket to be entered into drawings for prizes. One MCHS student will win $50.
Charles said the event will also serve to keep parents up to date with the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program at the school.
The GEAR UP program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The program provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grants serve students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow them through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.
The event at the school will bring together parents, students and teachers before the pressure of a new school year begins.
“It is a good time for parents to meet teachers in a relaxed environment,” Charles said.
In addition to activities, music and food, students will also be able to pick up their schedules.
The drawings will begin at 7:45. Charles invites everyone to bring a lawn chair join the faculty for a kick off to the 2012-13 term.
