The advice follows the discovery that the state made a $19 million mistake in calculating the value of Kanawha County’s coal reserves. Tax officials fear similar mistakes could have occurred elsewhere.
The reserves are coal believed to be in the ground but not yet mined.
Director Jeff Amburgey of the Property Tax Division of the state Tax Department sent a letter to Kanawha County commissioners earlier this week alerting them of the error.
The tax division sent letters to officials in all 55 West Virginia counties, advising them to use 2008 values.
