WILLIAMSON, W.Va. - The 2009 mingo County Middle School Girls Championship Tournament continued last night at the Williamson Fieldhouse with Gilbert and picking up berths in Saturday’s championship final.

Gilbert and Lenore will play in the championship game at 12:30 on Saturday. Kermit and Burch will play in the consolation game at 11:00 also on Saturday.

In a very low scoring affair, the Gilbert Middle Girls defeated Kermit 1 to 10 in Game no. 1 last night. Te game was highlighted by great defensive efforts by both clubs and the diffeence came down to a third quarter where Kernit’s defense faltered and the Lady Blue Devils were outscored 6 t 3 in the frame.

Despite the loss, Kermit Coach Okey Smith was nevertheless upbeat about his team’s performance against the No. 1 tournament seed. "We played an excellent defensive game, but we just couldnt get the shots to fall" the veteran coach said.

"Give Gilbert credit they have a very good team, Coach Cline always does a good job with them." noted Smith. "I thought that Adreana, Whitney, and Amanda did a good job of containing Candace Trent and Chrissy Farmer, but Paige Mullens stepped her game up and really killed us, especially in the third quarter."

Smith is looking forward to one last opportunity for his young Kermit girls team to prove their mettle on the hardwood this season.

"We have one more game on Saturday and I guarantee we will show up and play good defense, and if we hit some shots then we will be in position to win the game." Smith commented.

Meanwhile in Game No. 2, No. 2 Seeded Lenore defeated Burch Middle School by the score of 41 to 23.

The young Lenore Ranger team was led in scoring by Desirae Vance with 18 points and Whitney Evans with 14 points. Lenore Coach Ledger called the game a “complete team effort”.

Lenore Coach Ledger has no doubts as to what the Rangers will be facing on Saturday in the championship. “We must have a super team effort on Saturday to overcome Gilbert’s inside game and their height advantage.”
