Charlene Layne Hatfield, 86, of Belfry, Ky., passed away Tuesday evening at her home after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Charlene was born March 5, 1926, in Pike County, Ky., the daughter of the late Feldon and Bessie Murphy Layne.
She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred Hatfield; and by a brother, Feldon Layne Jr.
Charlene and Fred owned and operated Fred’s Grocery in Belfry for many years. They didn’t have any children of their own but they loved and generously helped to raise and feed many children in the Belfry area and a lot of children that attended Belfry High School. Charlene loved everybody and everybody loved her. She was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include one brother, Rudolph (Pauline) Layne of Belfry; sisters, Loraine (Oscar) Skeens of Belfry, and Loretta Bevins of Belfry; nieces and nephews, Patricia (David) Vargo, Freddie Keith McCoy, Gary Bruce (Jeana) Layne, Belinda (Johnny) Williamson and Jim Bevins and a host of other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many loving friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 13, at 11 a.m. in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Brother, Mark Helton and the Rev. Bob Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky., with John Williamson, Isaac Williamson, Mark Vargo, Andy Layne, Gary Layne and Jim Bevins serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel.
