With that reality, I know that February is the time to reflect and remind women all across West Virginia that it is “Go Red For Women” month. Go Red For Women is a national movement founded by the American Heart Associa-tion to fight the No. 1 killer of American women.
While I am curious how we are faring in our fight, unfortunately, in the whirlwind of errands and family obligations, and often the demands of jobs outside the home, it’s too easy to get out of touch with our own bodies. We can overlook our own health and miss even obvious signs that our hearts may be at risk.
Throughout West Virginia and the nation, so many people are passionately dedicated to helping women fight back against heart disease; however, we have to combine our passion with positive action to continue to educate all women about not only their risks but also about being proactive in finding their own personal course to better health for life.
Sometimes the greatest part we can play is being an advocate to get the message out. As the first lady of West Virginia, I often have an opportunity to speak with legislators, friends and at community gatherings and I always try to share this message. The action we take today for the women close to our hearts will lead to a healthier tomorrow for all women. We can all send an e-mail or text message (for our daughters . . . the younger generation!) to remind family, friends, and policy makers that we need to get the message out. With every contact, we also need to ask that individual to become a messenger.
Go Red For Women celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. We are making a difference in the lives of women across the country – the unique red dress logo is a visible symbol of our intent to improve heart health and live stronger and longer. For women at all stages of life and in all walks of life, the message is clear: Working together, we can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by encouraging others to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet and a positive attitude.
Let’s take the time in this “heart-filled” month of February to “listen” to our hearts and take charge of being women who care greatly about being around with those we love!
