As Obama accepts his oath of office, he will be sworn in just a short distance from the far end of the National Mall at the Lincoln Memorial the same location where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” King dreamed of a day when our children “will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character.”
Today, we are another giant step closer to realizing his dream. Today, the hopes and dreams of a nation battered by two wars and a national economic crisis are resting upon the new Obama administration. A new dawn is rising for America. A chance for a new beginning. An opportunity for renewed hope right here in southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia.
Today, we celebrate a renewal of the American dream. Yes, anything is possible in America.
We as a nation can overcome all obstacles no matter how great they are. The United States of America can and will endure. The dream of our founding fathers will live on. As we celebrate another peaceful transition of power, we also revel in our dreams and hopes for a better tomorrow.
Obama has readily admitted he is not a “miracle worker.”
With a national economy that is growing weaker by the day, we all realize it will take months and most likely years to turn our nation around. We realize that the change long promised by Obama won’t happen overnight. It is a process and a journey that will take time.
Jobs are being lost on a daily basis. Stores are closing at an alarming rate including many here in southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia. Retirement funds are being depleted, and a growing number of Americans are wondering if they will still have a job in the days and weeks ahead.
The challenge faced by our new president is great. However, the hope of the American people is greater. Together, there is no obstacle too big that we can not overcome. There is no challenge that is too great for our nation.
Yes, change is coming to America. But it will take time to realize that change.
Today, we begin a small step on our new journey. It is a historic journey. And we are all taking this new journey together one small step at a time. The long and grinding campaign season is officially over. Today regardless of who we voted for last November we the people are united as a nation and as a region.
Today, we speak as one.
A new dawn is rising for the United States of America. Today from Bluefield and Princeton to Tazewell and Welch we celebrate a new beginning.
God bless America!
