WELCH, W.Va. - Sometimes players step up to the challenge. And when they do, it has the effect of not only lifting their performance level, but that of an entire team.

That appears to have been the case Thursday night as the Williamson Wolfpack girls team, spurred by the 18 -point scoring output of senior center Sharrell Barnes, travelled to Big Creek High School and defeated the Owls in convincing fashion 59 to 46.

Following Williamson’s disastrous outing against the Lady Lions of Gilbert Wednesday night, Wolfpack Head Coach openly called Barnes out in terms of the team’s need for her to put up big offensive numbers in order for them to win. Barnes responded in the most positive of ways with an outstanding offensive performance against the Owls.

“Sharrell really stepped up tonight,” said Porter following the game.”She worked hard and did the things we need her to do if we are going to be successful. We need that type of performance consistently.”

The ‘Pack got 17 points as well from Jessica Fields who had been the leading scorer against Gilbert. The ladies from WHS outscored their opponents 33 to 23 in the second half to secure the win, a win Coach porter was impressed with.

“When you are traveling two hours over some very ugly road you never know what you are going to get when you get there “ sad Porter. “But I was pleased with our performance - we cut down on our number of turnovers and Erica and Jessica continued to be aggressive on offense. Olivia Banks and Shareekua Jones put in some good defensive play that forced several turnovers and we were able to convert on the other end which was an improvement for us.”

The Wolfpack girls next play Pikeville at home on Monday with a JV game at 5:30 at the WHS gym.
