Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson has been named to coach South squad in the upcoming North-South All-Star basketball game.
The game is now sponsored West Virginia Athletic Director’s North-South All-Star Basketball Classic, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on June 15 at the South Charleston Community Center.
Thompson, who recently guided the Tug Valley Panthers to the Class AA championship, said, “This is a big honor. I was asked to coach the team while we were up at the state tournament.”
“This is a nice way to cap off a championship season,” Thompson added. “I guess this is a feather in the cap.”
The Panthers finished the season with a fantastic 26-2 record. His squad defeated top quality opponents during both the regular season and during the tournament. Tug Valley beat Triple A schools like South Charleston, Logan and Ashland Paul Blazer. They beat Webster County, Wyoming East and top ranked Bluefield in the state tournament.
Panther senior Mason Pack, a 6-foot-9 center, has been named to the South roster. Thompson said he is excited about getting to coach Pack one more game.
“I guess I’ll have to start him,” Thompson said jokingly. Pack was recently named to the first team Class AA All-state squad and to the Williamson Daily News All-Area team.
Other players named to Thompson’s South squad are George Washington’s Tino diTrapano and Thomas Francke will be joined on the South team by Winfield’s Cameron Powell, Ot Elmore of South Charleston and Hurricane’s Garrett Tinsley.
This is Thompson’s second time coaching in the game. Two years ago he assisted Jerry Bradley of Greenbrier East.
