Although the Daily News could not secure an official count, as the clerk’s office was closed yesterday in observance of the birth of Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., officials said the approximate count Saturday night was 1,069 for the levy and 294 against it, minus a precinct.
Despite heavy debate among Mingo County Board of Education members, publicly fueled by William “Bill” Duty, anti-levy, voter turnout was low. Whether the scanty number showing up at the polls Saturday was due to cold weather or lack of interest remains to be discovered. However, what is known for those concerned about having enough money for the school system is the Mingo County educational system should continue uninterrupted for at least another five years.
The Daily News will report on the levy election more thoroughly later this week.
