Williamson center Sharrell Barnes was double and triple teamed most of the evening as Belfry’s girls sought to contain her on both ends of the court.
BELFRY, Ky. - The Williamson Wolfpack girls basketball team fell victim to a combination of their own ballhandling errors, foul trouble early for three starters and a swirling, in-the-face Belfry defense in a 51 to 35 loss Monday night at the Belfry High School gym.

The Pirates came on strong on defense all night long, forcing turnover after turnover and causing the Wolfpack to force shots that resulted in Belfry getting a lot of rebounds and a lot of scoring opportunities early on.

J.J. Bevins led all scorers on the night with 17 points and Kansas Reed contributed 12 as the Pirates cruised to vicotry.

Erica Hatfield, Jessica Fields and Devan Maynard each had 8 points to lead the Wolfpack in scoring.

It was a rough and tumble first half as Hatfield, Fields and Sharrell Barnes all had 3 fouls on them before the midway point fo the second quarter, forcing Wolfpack Coach Robin Porter to use her bench in a more frequent manner earlier on in the game than she had planned. With three starters in foul trouble and turnovers mounting, the Pirates were out to a 26 to 16 halftime lead.

Coming out in the second half, the Pirates alternated between a 2-3 defense and a modified 1-3-1 press defense to pressure the Wolfpack into making more mistakes and giving the ball up on steals and errant passes. They succeeded. Before the game was over, the Wolfpack had given up 24 turnovers.

Late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter, the ‘Pack came out in a press defense of their own nd had limited success until Fields and Barnes fouled out. Belfry broke the game open in the final frame, outscoring the ‘Pack 13 to 7. With the game decided, Williamson used it’s young reserve players for the final two minutes. Belfry did the same shortly thereafter.

Belfry Coach Amanda Stiltner was only partially pleased with her team’s effort. “It was a win, but I think we could have done even better on defense. I think our girls were intimidated by the (WHS’s Sharrell) Barnes’ girls size. We haven’t played anyone wth her presence.” Barnes had 7 rebunds a block and a steal. Also Devan Maynard had 5 rebounds and Mackenzie Stapleton and Olivia Banks had 4.
