CHARLESTON (AP) — U.S. and state flags will be lowered across the state in honor of a National Guard member from Putnam County who died in a non-combat related incident.

Gov. Joe Manchin ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Sunday in honor of 44-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Stefen Ellis Sammons.

Manchin’s office said Sammons died Monday at Camp Atterbury in Indiana while training for deployment to Afghanistan.
