Local teams hitting basketball camps this weekend

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPike’s National Coach of the Year, Kelly Wells begins team camp Monday with a full house heading his way. Games will be stretched out over five gyms including the Bear’s gym, Pike Central, Pikeville High School, the Blue Goose gym and the new Mullins gym.

Belfry High plays a strong Perry Central team at 2 p.m. and will quickly turn around at 3 p.m. to play Council, Va. Tug Valley will play East Ridge at 4 p.m. and Phelps at 6 p.m. These games will be played at PC’s gymnasium.

Thirteen more teams join in the action at the camp with Scott High School and Chapmanville High’s JV team. Over 120 games are scheduled around the five gyms through Wednesday.

A tournament will take place Thursday with details to be announced later.

Mingo Central headed to West Virginia University and faced some early tough competition.

The Miners faced Class AA Philip Barbour who finished 19-10 last year losing to Oak Hill in first round of state tournament; Class AAA Martinsburg at 4 p.m. who finished the season 14-7 and lost in Sectionals to Preston; Class AAA Archbishop Moeller, Ohio at 7 p.m. who were 22-3 after the 2010/11 season and lost in semi-finals of the Ohio State Tournament; and Class AA Wyoming East at 8 p.m. who finished the season 15-8 and were upset in Sectionals by Shady Spring.

As of press time, WDN was not informed of the outcome of Central’s games during their first day of camp at WVU.
