Chris Harris, magistrate for District 6 in Pike County, said his office received several complaints about a dilapidated house at the mouth of Turkey Creek, near the Appalachian Regional Hos-pital, adjacent to Ky. Route 292.
The county has been enforcing the dilapidated house ordinance, which forces property owners to tear down condemned houses, or have the county demolish the building and place a lien on the property to recover the cost of demolition.
“We contacted the individual who owns the house,” Harris said. “He was very receptive to what we had to say. He was so apologetic about the condition the house is in that he wanted to donate the land to the county in exchange for whatever it costs us to tear the house down..”
The property has been valued at $40,500.
The property owner, Lavoi Davis, who is 87 years old, is retired from the US Air Force, and lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. Attempts to speak with Davis were unsuccessful.
Harris said he is unsure what the county will do with the property.
“Its in a really good location,” Harris said. “I’m sure the county will find a good use for it.”
