HARDY, Ky. — An accident that occurred in Hardy, Ky., Monday evening that resulted in the arrest of a Williamson City Patrolman on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
Jefferson (Jeff) Taylor III, who has been an officer with the Williamson Police Department for a 2 year period, was off-duty and was traveling in his police cruiser when he lost control and crashed in the Hardy Camp community, striking an electric pole. Taylor, who was said to be intoxicated at the time of the accident, fled the scene. The cruiser is listed as a total loss.
According to the arresting officer, Kentucky State Police Trooper H. Smith, Taylor left the scene and was located approximately 2 hours after the crash occurred at his mother’s residence at Blackberry. He was taken into custody and transported to the Pike County Detention Center in Pikeville where he remained until Tuesday afternoon when he was arraigned on the charges and posted bond.
The Daily News contacted WPD Chief C.D. Rockel about the incident involving his officer and was told that an internal investigation is underway. The chief said he did not wish to comment on the case except to say that Patrolman Taylor had been removed from active duty with the department and would remain suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation into the accident by Trooper Smith.
