DELBARTON - Athletics and academics are often honored at schools. But arts programs, which have faced serious cuts across the country, are often overlooked, if not eliminated.

But, on Tuesday, May 1, and Wednesday, May 2, students from Mingo County Schools will be showing their artistic abilities. The event, titled Mingo County Arts Alive, will take place in the auditorium of Burch Middle School in Delbarton, with performances 7 p.m. each evening. There is no admission fee for either evening.

The program will feature small and large groups from schools all across the county and will include spoken monologues, small plays, instrumental solos, jazz bands, concert bands, choirs, guitar groups, the selective All-County Band and Choir, and more.

The evening will also include an art gallery that will be displaying visual art work from students across the county. The display will be available for viewing before and during the performances.

Mingo County Arts Alive is the brain child of Mingo Central principal Deborah Harris and is heavily supported by both school Superintendent Randy Keathly and Assistant Superintendent Rob Bobbera.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to see and support student musicians and artists from schools across our great county that will range in age from elementary through high school,” Mingo Central High School band director Terry Soltesz said.

“If you can come out to support our young people and their artistic endeavors you will not be disappointed by what you see. This is a small sampling of the wonderful arts activities that are happening in our schools and our county’s administration, principals, and teachers should be commended for being so proactive in ensuring the availability of arts education in our schools. Please come out and enjoy a couple of evenings of entertainment and show your support for the growing arts programs in this wonderful county.”
