FREEBURN, Ky. – Thomas DeVenny Lodge #928 has established a scholarship for graduating high school students from East Ridge High School and Phelps High School. Those high schools are located in the area of Pike County where the lodge is located.
The scholarships are for $500 each for a total of $1,000 dollars. They will be awarded to graduating seniors from East Ridge and Phelps High Schools. Students applying for the scholarships will be evaluated on academic performance, community service, and other criteria, and are open for application by both male and females.
Lodge members Roger Ford and B.J. Fuller are funding the scholarship, saying the scholarship has been named in honor of the late Carl Biliter. Biliter was a Past Master of Thomas DeVenny Lodge and a long-time Pike County School Board Member.
The scholarship will be formally named The Carl Biliter Masonic Scholarship.
“As Freemasons, we are to aid others in need. We want to recognize academic achievement and, more importantly, community service and service to others. This scholarship will recognize students from East Ridge and Phelps. In naming the scholarship, we also want to recognize the long-time service of Mr. Carl Biliter. He served his community and the Pike County Schools for many years,” said Roger Ford.
Likewise, Lodge member B.J. Fuller commented that the scholarship is being set-up to help recognize students who not only excel academically but also contribute in service to their communities.
“I’m honored to help fund The Carl Biliter Masonic Scholarship. This scholarship will help young people to better themselves by obtaining a college degree. We, as Masons, are called to help those in need. Roger and I hope that this scholarship will help do that in some small way,” B.J. Fuller said.
Applications are being mailed to high school principals, guidance counselors and teachers in January for distribution by guidance counselors and teachers to interested students. Applications are also available by calling 606-437-1646 or 606-432-7404. Scholarships winners will be announced in May 2013.
