WILLIAMSON — It’s time to get muddy again - TrailFest is coming back to Gilbert.
From Oct. 4 until Oct. 8, the 12th iteration of one of Gilbert’s biggest events looks to be one of the best yet, with ATV’s, live music, a parade and more activities than ever before.
Gilbert Mayor Vivian Livingood spoke to the Daily News regarding the event.
“The Larry Joe Harless Community Center will be providing music on Friday night, and the Town of Gilbert will provide it Saturday night,” Livingood said.
The band chosen by the town will be Bulletproof, a rock band from Pineville which performed last year.
She also encouraged everyone to come out at 11 p.m. Saturday night for “the $5,000 fireworks show,” conducted by Stephen Casey, set off at the bridge to the community center.
“It’s going to be huge,” Livingood said. “I’m excited for it.”
She also discussed a returning event and a brand new one for TrailFest: the mud run and Dirt Trax TV.
The mud run, according to Livingood, is where a tennis ball is thrown into the mud pit with people jumping in and scrambling to locate it for prizes. Unsurprisingly, Livingood said that people get absolutely covered in mud.
Dirt Trax TV will be present in Gilbert for TrailFest, holding a “Mod Your Quad,” contest. Livingood said that the contest would appear on one of their future television shows.
The ATV parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, and Livingood encouraged everyone who wanted to get in or out of Gilbert to do so before 6:20 p.m., as that is when traffic would be shut down. The town council, at its most recent meeting, voted to enforce helmet laws this year.
“Everyone who is operating an ATV will be required to wear a helmet,” Livingood said. “But a helmet is not required for anyone being pulled along on a float.”
She anticipates the parade to be very long, saying that once the first vehicle crosses the ending point at the community center’s bridge, some vehicles won’t have even started.
The mayor also said that roughly 2,500 people are expected to be in town for the four days of ATV madness, with some coming from as far as Wyoming and Canada. She said that her lodge, Livingood Lodging, has been booked for TrailFest a full year in advance, and has even had some people asking if they could book already for TrailFest 2013. She said that other lodges in town had experienced the same.
As far as security goes, Livingood said that the Gilbert Police Department would be on overtime for the event’s duration, and that the West Virginia State Police and Mingo County Sheriff’s Department would also be present.
When all is said, Livingood has a bright outlook on this year’s TrailFest.
“I have high hopes,” Livingood said. “Every year, we fine tune the details, it gets easier and easier.
“We’re really excited to open our town up.”
