COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Mingo County man wanted for burglary and a home invasion in which three people were tied up with duct tape and then robbed has been apprehended by the Columbus, Ohio Police Department and is now awaiting extradition back to West Virginia.
According to information provided by Mingo County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD) Sgt. Joe Smith, Danny Colegrove Jr., 26, of Laurel Creek, was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 2, on outstanding warrants from Mingo County that had been entered into the NCIC (National Crime Investigation Center), after he was involved in a traffic stop while a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over for traveling the wrong way on a one way street.
The driver of the car was Matthew Colegrove, the brother of the defendant. When the police ran a DMV check on the men’s driver’s license, it was soon discovered that Danny was a wanted man and was quickly taken into custody without incident. The charges pending against him in Mingo County include 2 counts of burglary, 2 counts of grand larceny, 2 counts of conspiracy and 3 counts of kidnapping. Colegrove will also be charged with being a fugitive from justice/fleeing.
Colegrove, along with his accomplice, James Messer of Jennie’s Creek, allegedly broke into a residence at Marrowbone on Dec. 7, 2012, and stole 3 long guns, 1 hand gun and several bottles of prescription pills while the homeowners were away. A few hours later, the duo traveled to the Laurel Creek home of William and Vicki Evans, where they proceeded to use the guns they stole during the burglary to hold the couple and another individual at gunpoint, forced William to open his safe from which they stole numerous items, and are then said to have duct taped the hands and feet of the victims before leaving.
A few days later, Lloyd Newsome of Lenore, the grandfather of Colegrove, was arrested by officers with the MCSD on charges of receiving and transferring stolen property after he was found to be in possession of the 3 long guns reported to have been those stolen from the Marrowbone home. The handgun however, was not recovered and was believed to be in Colegrove’s possession.
Messer was also taken into custody at a later date, after the MCSD received a tip that he was at his father’s residence on Jennies Creek. The defendant attempted to flee into a wooden area behind the dwelling but was apprehended after a short foot chase by the deputies. He was arraigned before Magistrate Pam Newsome and was remanded to the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $240,000 cash bond. Both defendants are convicted felons and are currently on bond on other charges.
Sgt. Smith told the Daily News that he plans to travel to Ohio the latter part of next week to transport Colegrove back to Mingo County to face the pending charges against him.
“We’re very relieved to know that both of these men are now in custody and behind bars,” stated Sheriff Eugene Crum. “Colegrove will be arraigned on these charges once he is extradited and I’m sure that both will receive stiff sentences for the crimes they have committed.”
“We have a great group of officers that are dedicated and committed to seeing that justice is served and several of them spent a lot of time working this case and are to be commended for their efforts.”
