WILLIAMSON — GEAR UP is giving Mingo students food and fun while they can learn about the college opportunities available to them when they host Family College night next week at the Williamson campus of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
The GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
The program provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grants serve students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow them through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.
Elizabeth Manuel, Regional Coordinator for West Virginia GEAR UP, said this event will be different than in years past.
“This year will be the first year we are targeting Mingo County alone,” Manuel said. She added there are rewards other than information about college for those who attend the event.
“Participants will be entered for a chance to win an Apple iPad, a new computer, and more,” she explained. “Plus, we’ll have tons of fun activities. Bring the whole family!”
Family College night will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26. All Mingo County students and their families and encouraged to attend.
