WILLIAMSON - There is something special about the sight of veterans standing tall and proud as they salute the American flag that can’t ever be duplicated or replaced.
One has to wonder of the many thoughts and memories that flash through their minds when they look upon the stars and stripes - a symbol of our freedom.
Friday morning, as the bright sunshine began to warm the cool temperatures, Dr. Steve Wilson and the staff of Wilson Eyecare Associates gathered beside of their business on West Second Avenue to raise a new American flag that will proudly fly above them.
Joining Dr. Wilson and his staff were members of the Belfry Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and the entire student body of the Williamson Christian School. Dr. Wilson himself performed the Star Spangled Banner as the crowd looked on and the veterans slowly raised the flag until it was flowing in the gentle wind.
“We want to thank everyone for being here with us and for experiencing this moment,” said Dr. Wilson.
Speaking to the students, he remarked that he hoped that when they drive by the business and see the flag flying, his prayer was that they would remember the true meaning, and know that many lives were laid down by veterans to allow them to experience the freedom they are blessed with today.
The veterans who conducted the flag raising were retired Marines that served our country in the Vietnam War: James Young, Larry Blackburn, Doug Caraway and Fred Baldwin.
