A bridge at Laurel Creek was dedicated last week in the memory of a young woman who exactly died three years ago yesterday.
Brittany Nicole Dentro, 18, of Lenore, a senior at Logan High School, died in a two-vehicle accident April 20, 2009. She would have graduated in May of that year, and had planned to go to Marshall University, where she was accepted in the nursing program, intending to become a registered nurse.
The bridge was dedicated by a senate concurrent resolution, pushed forward by State. Sen. H. Truman Chafin.
“It was the first senate resolution passed this regular session,” Chafin said in an email to the Daily News.
Brittany’s parents, Tony and Ginger Dentro, along wth her sisters, Alisha and Heather, and hundreds of friends who knew her were on hand for the dedication.
Delegate Justin Marcum, along with Sheriff Lonnie Hannah and County Clerk “Big” Jim Hatfield were present as well. Mingo County Sheriff’s Department Chief Field Deputy James Smith handled the traffic that was stopped for the entire memorial cermony.
Brittany attended Lenore from Kindergarten through the eighth-grade and played softball, basketball and was a cheerleader. While at LHS, she participated in various activities, such as coaching the Tug Valley Midget League cheerleading team.
The senate’s resolution stated that Brittany loved spending time with her family and was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was 8-years-old. She attended a diabetes camp in Wheeling and Charleston and eventually became a counselor to help others with children diagnosed with diabetes.
“Whereas, Brittany Nicole Dentro enjoyed helping her grandfather operate his convenience store and helping her grandmother with patients in the ICU at Williamson Memorial Hospital,” the resolution stated. “Whereas, sadly, Brittany Nicole Dentro passed on April 20, 2009, bringing to an end a young, precious life that was filled with compassion and love for others and unlimited potential.
“Whereas, Brittany Nicole Dentro left behind a host of family and friends all of whom will miss her dearly; and whereas, it is fitting to name this bridge as a memorial to the life of Brittany Nicole Dentro.”
Brittany Nicole Dentro was born April 9, 1991, in Williamson, to Tony and and Ginger Dentro. She died April 20, 2009.
She was 18-years-old.
