GOODY, Ky. - A Thursday afternoon accident that occurred near Appalachian Tobacco and CVS Pharmacy off U.S. 119 resulted in the driver of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma being transported to a local hospital.
According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Hoyt Smith, Paul Owens, 25, of Hardy, Ky., had made the turn off of U.S. 119 toward the City of Williamson, when a 1994 Ford F-150 operated by Hugh Tomblin, of Dingess, allegedly exited the parking lot of Appalachian Tobacco and failed to see the oncoming traffic.
Tomblin’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Owen’s Toyota, doing substantial damage.
“Mr. Tomblin stated that he was looking at the traffic coming from the bridge and failed to see Mr. Tomblin’s truck approaching from the opposite direction,” said Smith.
Owens was transported to the Appalachian Regional Hospital by Appalachian First Response Ambulance Service for evaluation after complaining with neck and back pain. Owens was the sole occupant of his vehicle and is said to have been traveling to the Norfolk Southern Railroad Williamson Yard where he is employed.
Tomblin was not injured in the accident, nor were his two female passengers. Trooper Smith cited Tomblin for no proof of insurance, improper license plate (belonged on another vehicle), failure to register vehicle and no vehicle license.
Tomblin, who claimed to have insurance on the truck but had no paperwork to prove that point, will be required to appear in District Court in Pikeville at a later date.
The Belfry Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and performed traffic control until the vehicles were moved from the roadway, and also cleared debris left behind by the damaged Toyota.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Smith.
