LENORE - The Veteran’s Administration is inviting area vets to an open house to acquaint them with a new clinic in Mingo County.
The Lenore VA Outreach Clinic has been receiving patients since the beginning of October, but will have an open house to welcome veterans and make them aware of the services available locally.
Debbie Brammer, spokesperson for the VA, said the open house and enrollment fair would be from 1 until 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.
The new location is a 2,220 square foot facility is a new building, located in the Lenore Business Center. Dr. Manolo Tampoya, the physician for the local VA, along with Leisha Roberts, R.N. and office clerk Maurice Parent, see patients four days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Services that are provided at the clinic include the usual outpatient visits as well as health maintenance services, such as flu shots and lab work. Leisha Roberts said the clinic has resources to treat mental health issues, diabetes and weight loss problems, and plans are in place to include other medical specialties in the future.
Another feature of the new clinic is Telehealth, an internet-based system that will allow patients to interact face-to-face with specialists in the Huntington VA Hospital.
The new clinic also provides internet access to enable veterans to access their medical records online through My HealtheVet, a web-based personal health records.
U.S. Navy veteran David Blackburn of Forest Hills was at the Lenore clinic with his wife Orlean to receive treatment for high blood pressure.
Blackburn, who served from 1959-63 in Cuba, said it much more convenient to visit the clinic in Lenore than to drive to Huntington.
“I went to Huntington,” Blackburn said. “Then I saw Dr. Tampoya in Williamson and Chapmanville, and its good to be able to come here.”
He said he receives all his healthcare through the VA.
“I am completely satisfied with the care I have received,” he said. “It has been excellent, I have no complaints.”
Debbie Brammer said she hopes area veterans will visit the clinic next week to learn what is available to those who have served their country.
“We want to enroll vets,” she said. “Many times they don’t know what services they are eligible for, we want them to come see us.”
