LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Belfry Middle School topped off an amazing season with a 46-14 win in the championship game over Louisville Christian Academy on Sunday. This was the Kentucky Middle School Football Association 2012 Championship and playoff.
To get into the finals, the young Pirate’s, defeated T.T. Knight of Louisville 51-14 on Saturday and came right back the next day to win in the title game on Sunday.
With a red seas of the Pond Creek Nation filling the stands of Lexington Catholic Stadium the Pirates wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Devin Varney started the game with a great return to the Centurians 40-yard line. BMS finished it off with a 6-play, 40-yard drive with RayQuan Horton hitting the end zone from 3-yards out. The PAT kick was good by Austin Woolum.
Horton got things going on the defensive side of the ball for the Angry Red defense with a punt block and fumble recovery in the end zone. The kick from Woolum was good making the score 14-0 with 3:44 left in the first quarter.
Varney got things going again on the defensive side of the ball with an interception and he returned it to the house from 46 yards away for a TD. Woolum’s kick made it 21-0 in the first.
The second quarter continued like the first, Horton once again scored on the defensive side of the ball after recovering a fumble in the end zone. Woolum’s PAT was good making it 28-0.
Andrew Fletcher then got in the action with a 51-yard run to hit pay-dirt, Woolum’s kick brought the score to 35-0 with less than 2:00 minutes remaining in the half.
With the Centurians unable to move the ball on offense the Pirates got one more shot before the half. All eyes were on Woolum as he lined up for a 35-yard field goal. He didn’t let the crowd down as he split the uprights to end the half with the score of 38-0.
With the score, the clock continued to run in the second half. The Pirates final score came late in the third quarter as Cameron Catron hit pay-dirt from 41- yards out. The 2-point conversion from Austin Hall made it 46-0.
The Centurians finished with two late touchdowns to make the final score 46-14.
Cole Bentley lead the way on the defensive side of the ball with seven tackles, Horton and Hall each had six and Caleb Whitt and Josh Thacker chipped in with five apiece.
Only a brief lightning storm could stop the BMS Pirates Saturday in the state semi- finals against the T.T. Knight Bobcats of Louisville. The Pirates scored on every possession but their last, when they took a knee to claim a victory. The big red offense got rolling with a touchdown from Hall from 36 yards out. Horton took the Bobcats running back down in their own end zone giving the Pirates a safety. The score stood at 8-0.
Fletcher got into the action taking the pigskin to the house from 34 yards out. The 2-point conversion was good by Hall pushing the lead to 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pirates decided to put the game out of reach in the second quarter scoring three more times.
The Bobcats got on the board with a tipped ball, three Pirate defenders tipped the pass before landing in the receiver’s hands. That was the first touchdown the starting unit had given up in over two months, which was on August 30 to be exact.
Catron returned the kickoff 70 yards to hit pay dirt. After holding the Bobcats on defense, Catron called his own number and went 26 yards into the end zone. Woolum kicked the PAT to make it 29-6. Horton bulled his way into the end zone from 2-yards out. Horton also took the ball in for the 2-point conversion. The score stood at 37-6 at the half.
Josh Thacker hit pay-dirt from 28 yards out in the third quarter after running over a few Bobcat defenders right up the middle. The PAT by Woolum made it 44-6. With the running clock due to more than a 35 point lead the quarter ended quickly. The Pirate offense got the ball back in the fourth and Catron scored a TD from 14 yards out. The kick was good by Woolum.
With the score standing at 51-14 the offense took a knee to claim the victory. Chase Dove and Catron both had interceptions and Hall came away with a fumble recovery. Defensive standouts for the Pirates were Hall, Thacker and Bentley.
Horton received the defensive MVP award, while Woolum got offensive MVP trophy by the KMSFA. Bentley, Carton, Fletcher and Hall also received awards.
The BMS team finished the season undefeated with an impressive 17-0 record.
During their amazing playoff run, Belfry Middle School, who was seeded No. 8 in their bracket, defeated Martin County, Greenup County, Mason County, Corbin, TT Knight and Christian Academy of Louisville.
At the event the Belfry cheerleaders also placed 1st in the KMSA cheerleading state championship and the Pirate fans won the Pep Award for best cheering section and given to the school with the most school spirit and support.
The team was treated like rock stars with the welcoming they received arriving back to Pond Creek. Numerous fans lined the roadway along U.S. 119 from Stone to the Belfry Middle School building. They were escorted by fire trucks and police cruisers, with horns and sirens blaring from Coburn Mountain to BMS.

The BMS Pirates are led by head coach Elbert Thacker, the assistants are Herbie Dotson, Jeremy Howard, Erik Rash, Ivan Lee, Andrew Elkins, Cody West, Gary Hall, Van Gibbs, Mark Cook and James Hardin.
