PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Sharing culture through food was the order of the evening when the Pikeville chapter of Rotary International held its annual International Dinner fundraiser.
Jerrie Clark headed the committee for the dinner. She said the event is in its seventh year.
“We started with four countries represented,” Clark said. “This year we had cooking from Syria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, India, Japan, China, Mexico and the United States.”
She added the American food was “hillbilly” cuisine, pinto beans and cornbread.
The dinner had over 200 attendees, and raised $8,000 for various Rotary projects.
“‘Service above self’ is the Rotary motto, and we try to serve our local community as well as the international community,” Clark said.
Some of the projects the Pikeville Rotary funds include “Service Above Self” scholarships. The organization furnishes a $1,000 scholarship to each of the six high schools in Pike County. Pikeville Rotary donated a camper to Red Cross, for Red Cross to outfit as they needed to provide for disaster workers, donate to the Boy Scouts Coats for Kids program and contribute to Habitat for Humanity.
Proceeds from the International Dinner will go to provide meals for workers at this weekend’s RAM, or Remote Area Medical, clinic, which offers medical and dental services to uninsured and underinsured people.
Dessert for the dinner was a platter of cupcakes decorated with the American flag.
