The Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville is currently featuring an exhibit titled “Scrutiny,” the works of graduating senior, Amy Lester.
The art show meets part of the exit requirement for a graduating art major and is a reflection of the student’s development and interests. Lester’s show features a variety of media including: drawings, sculptures and paintings with the inclusion of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional design work.
Lester is the daughter of Kim and Steve Akers, of Stone, Ky.
“As a little girl, I watched my grandfather create many works of art,” Lester said. “I grew up with each of my birthday cards being hand painted and most of my toys handmade. I would crawl into his lap and ask him to show me all of his tricks. It was then I began to fall in love with the world of art.”
Pat Kowalok, professor of art, said that Lester has “stretched her technical comfort zone.”
“She has challenged herself, her classmates–all of us–intellectually,” Kowalok said. “Amy is double majoring in art and math and has pursued these passions with spirited commitment. There is doing well at college according to the standards set by teachers. There is also doing well at your education according to your personal goals and standards. Amy has always set a much higher bar for herself regarding what she wants from her education.”
The art show featuring her works will run through April 26. Lester will discuss her artwork during a reception on Friday, April 13, at 5 p.m. The community has been invited to both the art show and reception.
The Weber Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Record Memorial Building at the University of Pikeville. Gallery hours are: Monday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Tuesday 9 - 11 a.m., noon - 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., 3 - 5 p.m.; Thursday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
