WILLIAMSON - “They’re getting brazen with their drug buys,” stated Mingo County Special Investigator Eugene Crum, as he was speaking about a drug arrest that occurred Thursday afternoon on Third Avenue in Williamson. “They’ve got by with it for so long they don’t feel the need to hide anymore or make their deals in the dark. They’re buying and selling in broad daylight, out in the open for everyone to see.”

“A blind eye has been turned to these crimes for far too long, and I can guarantee you it will no longer be tolerated. One arrest at a time – we’ll take them down.”

Crum was driving his vehicle in downtown Williamson Thursday afternoon when he spotted what appeared to be suspicious activity in the parking lot located on Third Avenue and Harvey Street, and decided to pull over and see how the event played out.

“I backed into the parking lot with the rear of my vehicle facing the pickup truck that contained one individual, with another one standing outside the driver’s side door,” explained Crum. “I sat there less than five minutes and witnessed the exchange of pills for money.”

“I wasn’t disguised, and I wasn’t hidden. They had looked at me when I pulled in and knew I was there, but that didn’t deter them from making the exchange. They had obviously gotten very comfortable with making these deals in a public place with people all around them.”

Crum radioed for Williamson Police Chief C.D. Rockel to respond, and one man, Anthony Collins, 57, was taken into custody. The suspect making the buy fled the scene on foot. He is expected to soon be arrested, since the officers are aware of his identity and plan to have a warrant issued against him.

Rockel stated in the criminal complaint that the defendant confessed to the drug transaction after he was read his rights. Statements were also obtained against Collins from another party who had attempted to make a drug buy during this investigation.

Collins was charged with one count of possession with intent to deliver a Schedule III controlled substance (Hydrocodone). The defendant was arraigned before Mingo County Chief Magistrate Dallas Toler, who set the bond at $25,000 full-cash.

“I want to say how much I appreciate and respect Williamson Police Chief Dave Rockel,” remarked Crum. “Hands down, he’s the best drug investigator that I’ve ever been associated with and one of the best overall police officers in the state.”

“We’re blessed to have an officer like him protecting our citizens.”

“Dave cares about the residents of Williamson and the entire county, and he’s determined to curtail the drug activity. Working together, and with the support of our prosecutor and county commission, I know we can successfully reach that goal.”

Collins made the 16th drug related arrest that has been achieved since Crum was named as Special Investigator less than two months ago.

BHAT - You can't see the forest for the trees. LOL. Let me break it down for you. A "War" is made up of campaigns. These campaigns consist of strategies; comprised of methods to be executed; all in the name of winning the waged war. Eugene Crum has only been actively placed in the role of "investigator" for a short while. Yet, since this undertaking, has proven that he is serious in waging a full-scale apocalyptic-type war against drugs and substance-abuse in Mingo County. He has shown that he has the vision, drive, resources and most importantly the candor and desire to fulfill the obligations that are facing individuals, families and communities throughout Mingo County. Not once have I read an article where Eugene has "usurped" his authority, breached civil rights, or patted himself on the back for the results of the multitudes of arrests that have been made only recently; since he has been involved. Since he is the kind of man not taken by pride and showmanship - as some have been in the past - Let me provide this chance to tell him what a fine job he is doing. I believe that Eugene Crum deserves to be recognized for what has already transitioned in Mingo County; in large part because of his involvement. As stated in the aforesaid article, the dealers that have gotten away with rampant activities, street-justice and junk transactions are now being smoked out of their holes and led out of their comfort zones. Ha ha....this is the first BIG indication that "change is a comin'". See, when people have to quickly alter their routines, they make mistakes. These thugs have pushed dope so casually that apparently, they forgot one essential fundamental rule of being a narcotics pusher: The head is on a swivel for a reason! They have neglected to check out their surroundings! Their style has been - deal and don't worry. Well, it may have worked in the past, but "There's a new sheriff in town!" It ain't gonna be effective any longer. I bet they start noticing the idiosyncrasies. Paranoia is starting to set in amongst the drug dealers; they now see that Mr. Crum was so, so very serious about his promises regarding waging a war on drugs. A few years ago, I was a dealer. I made some bad choices, paid for them and started life anew....Today, I am a proud daddy of a beautiful baby boy. I am clean and I make daily decisions knowing full well that they will impact the future of my son. Eugene, my family is proud of your vision, we support you and applaud you. Personally, I hope and truly believe that this war is going to catch on and become contagious. If you are pushing pills, an active element amongst the fabric of the problem, it's time to either re-locate, decide that it's time to stop, or either realize that your time will soon be up. It's only a matter of time. Eugene Crum is not going to be "Special Investigator" forever. He is going to be your Sheriff in a few short months. When he takes the oath to perform those duties; look out! No amount of dope will be able to numb the pain you feel when he and his boys crack that head!!!!

notscaredoflh: Not hard to see why you fail to understand any of my post. Where did you go to school? I'm guessing Mingo County. Before posting another comment I suggest you flag down a car with an OBAMA/BIDEN bumper sticker and ask them to proof read it. (clue---"there" means over yonder) Now, go back to watching DWTS!

Has anyone noticed we've been "picking them off one at a time" for forty years and the pill plague just keeps growing? The war on drugs is a dismal failure and will continue to be unless we change direction drastically. Attack the source! Of course this gives Mr. Crum lots of press and photo ops and lets him take swipes at his predecessor. Typical politico. Decriminalize weed, shoot a few pill doctors and treat addicts. A sure sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Remember when former Pike County Judge Exec, Shotgun Bill Deskins, said he was going to close Pike's borders to drug traffic? What a simple fool. What a bad joke. Listening to Eugene Crum's blather is like deja vu all over again. The only beneficiaries of the war on drugs are the trough wallowers within the criminal injustice system!

All I understood in the above comment was blah blah blah. Mr Crum has done more in 2 weeks than our current sheriff has done in 8 years. Sheriff Crum is going to put a stop to drugs in Mingo County. If your a drug head or a drug dealer standby there coming for you
