In a special meeting of the Mingo County Commission Thursday, Rosie Crum, widow of the late Sheriff Eugene Crum, was named interim sheriff. She will serve the remainder of his term.
President John Mark Hubbard said there was only one item on the agenda. He then turned the floor over to Greg ‘Hootie’ Smith who said: “I believe the people of Mingo County have elected Eugene to the position of sheriff because of his platform, beliefs and promises. It’s a very sad day when we have to make an appointment to fill his term. After much thought and prayer, the three of us have come to believe that the best plan to fulfill this obligation is with the person who knew Eugene the best. The person who knew his stand on crime and drugs, who knew his plans for Mingo County and who was his best friend and soulmate. My recommendation is that we appoint Eugene’s widow, Rosie Crum, to fill his position.”
Then commissioner Dave Baisden said: “I pondered all night over this decision. Rosie knows him better than anyone. We have spoke with each member of the sheriff’s department and they have all commited to unite around Rosie and they all support her appointment as sheriff.”
He ended by saying: “To appoint someone outside of the Crum family would be unacceptable and our deputies have told us they would be honored to serve under Rosie as the interim sheriff.
Smith then said: “I want the record to reflect that we all stand behind the platform of the former sheriff Eugene Crum. It still stands, if you’re dealing drugs in Mingo County you will go to jail”
He said Rosie would be attending the candlelight vigil this evening and would be sworn into the office of sheriff at this time.
Williamson Mayor Darrin McCormick said “The city council and the city of Williamson will fully support Commander Rockel, the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department, the Mingo County Commission and the citizens of Mingo County to continue the fight against drugs and drug trafficking.”
