WILLIAMSON - Thanksgiving is a holiday meant to remind us of the good things in our life, of our family, our health, employment - the list goes on and on. For those who are down on their luck, it is sometimes hard to find something in their life to be thankful for. Having neighbors and friends who donate countless hours at the Jacob’s Well Mission preparing a holiday feast for anyone who may not otherwise have the means or the opportunity to partake of a Thanksgiving dinner is a bright ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak day.
Jeanette O’Brien, the Director and President of Jacob’s Well and her group of volunteers had already served well over 100 people within the first hour after opening their doors last Friday, as the tables inside were laden with dishes that included ham, turkey and dressing, and an assortment of side dishes and desserts. Plans were to continue serving the Thanksgiving meal until approximately 4 p.m., or yntil their food supply was depleted.
The mission, located at 151 E. 3rd Ave. in Williamson, feeds the hungry every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and appreciates any donations of food items they receive. O’Brien stated that she would open the doors 5 days a week if she had more people that would volunteer their services to cook and serve the food.
“For those who have never worried where their next meal is coming from or who have had to choose between paying their electric bill, paying for their medications or buying groceries, the services we provide are extremely important. We don’t turn anyone away – we are doing God’s work and feeding the hungry,” said O’Brien.
