WILLIAMSON — The Mingo County Grand Jury convened on Wednesday, February 20th, and returned a total of 13 true bills that included 6 sealed indictments which were drug related cases.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury arraigned four of the defendants arrested on the sealed indictments on Thursday morning. Two of those arrested, George Ruben White, of Taylorville and Marvin Vance, of Breeden, had been indicted in January on drug charges and now faces additional counts against them.

White was indicted (J13-F73) on Wednesday for 1 count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone and Morphine) with intent to deliver and 1 count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (Hydrocodone) with intent to deliver. These charges stemmed from the search conducted of White’s business and residence following his arrest on Friday, Feb. 1 that yielded a variety of prescription pills, currency and firearms.

White was represented for his arraignment hearing by Attorney Charles “Butch” West and is scheduled to stand trial on these and previous charges on April 2nd of this year. He remains free on bond in the amount of $80,000 and will continue to be on the home confinement program at this time.

Vance, who was also previously arrested on a sealed indictment served on Feb. 1, was indicted this Wednesday (J13-F72) on 1 count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone) with intent to deliver and 1 count of possession of a Schedule III controlled substance (Hydrocodone) with intent to deliver. These charges were presented to the grand jury for consideration following his initial arrest.

Vance was represented by West and will remain on home confinement on an $80,000 surety bond, with $10,000 of it being in cash. His case will also be tried on April 2nd in Mingo County Circuit Court.

Kenneth Edward Woods, of Taylorville, was arraigned on a sealed indictment (J13-F74) that includes 4 criminal counts; 2 counts of delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone) and 2 counts of conspiracy to deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone).

Woods had been arrested by officers Wednesday evening following the grand jury’s returned indictments, and was transported form the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden for his arraignment hearing on Thursday. He was represented by Attorney Diana Carter-Weidel, and was issued a $65,000 bond. The trial date of April 2nd was set in this case.

Corrinna Slone, aka as “Corrinna Smith”, was arraigned on a sealed indictment (J13-F71) that includes charges of 1 count of delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance (Oxycodone) and 1 count of conspiracy to deliver a Schedule I controlled substance (Oxycodone). She was arrested Wednesday evening after a true bill was returned against her. Smith was represented at her arraignment hearing by Attorney Joshua Ferrell and was remanded back to the custody of the regional jail until which time she meets the requirements and stipulations of her $65,000 bond. The defendant was issued a trial date of April 2nd.

Apparently, several of these indictments relate to people who were in possession of pharmaceuticals which they did not need for their own ailments; ipso facto, doctors somewhere within the WDN readership area, are writing scripts for people who have no legitimate medical need. I didn't notice any indictments for any pill docs. Why? Surely, one of the WDN's crusading journalists should look into this. We'll never make a dent in the pill plague just by jailing the addicts...get serious---go after the source. You all know why Doc Shafer was allowed to operate with impunity for over twenty years, don't you? If not, check with the Secretary of State's office. Political donations are a matter of public record. ASHLEY JUDD (DEM-KY) 2016!
