WILLIAMSON — The West Virginia Division of Forestry’s spring forest fire season began on Friday, March 1, and all outdoor burning will be prohibited during daylight hours through the date of May 31.
According to Mingo County Forestry Fire Warden Ben Brock, during this three month period outdoor burning will be prohibited between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. All outdoor burning must have an adequate safety strip at least 10 feet around the fire source and the burning area, by law, must never be left unattended.
If it is necessary to burn vegetative debris during fire season (vegetative debris being leaves, grass, brush, slash and stumps) individuals must by law, conduct the burning during the safer evening hours of 5 and 7 p.m. Extreme caution needs to be used to prevent the fire from spreading. Brock said anyone in violation of forest fire laws could face fines of up to $1,000 plus payment of court costs and fire suppression costs, should the fire escapes its boundaries.
