The Pike County School System is getting a head start on the rest of the state by piloting a new system of teacher and administrator evaluation.
Trainers Abbie Combs, a consultant with Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) and Carol Mullins, Instructional Specialist for the state Department of Education, have been spending time in the district training principals and teachers on the Professional Growth and Effectiveness System (PGES) which will be implemented across the state in the 2014-15 school year.
“Pike County has really taken a proactive position,” Combs said about the new standards framework for evaluation. Mullins agreed calling Pike Educators “sponges” who have eagerly embraced the new system and soaked up the training material with enthusiasm. Mullins said she had been in the county, especially in the Johns Creek/Mullins schools, for some time, even before the training for the multiple schools in the district held in early June.
The state is moving from their former way of evaluating teacher and administrator performance to a new means that follows a strict formula of evaluation of effectiveness and develops a plan of growth. The vision for PGES is to have “every student taught by an effective teacher and every school led by an effective principal.”
The goal is “to create a fair and equitable system to measure teacher and leader effectiveness and act as a catalyst for professional growth.”
The standards were originally developed through a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that involved 3,000 teacher volunteers and dozens of education experts and researchers.
Pike County Schools will begin implementing the system in the 2013-14 school year which begins on August 5 for teachers and August 7 for students.
