WILLIAMSON - A man was arrested yesterday for nighttime burglary and petit larceny, but his questioning revealed another crime he had allegedly committed earlier this month.

Stephen Davidson, 27, of Turkey Creek, Ky., was arrested yesterday on warrants for the aforementioned charges stemming from a breaking and entering into a home on Levine Street, where he allegedly stolen a new Xbox 360 game console, Williamson Police Chief C.D. Rockel said.

However, during his questioning, it was revealed that he had allegedly participated with another man in robbing an “elderly gentleman,” Rockel told the Daily News.

On March 4, at around 9 p.m., Rockel said that Davidson and another man, whose name was not given, broke into a senior citizen’s home on West Fifth Avenue, whose name was also not given. The chief said that the two men shoved an 85-year-old man down and began rummaging through his pockets, ultimately robbing him of $340 before “taking off through the back door.”

Rockel said that Davidson had apparently been bragging about robbing the man, that word got around and the police picked up on it.

“When he was questioned, he confessed,” Rockel said of Davidson.

The chief said that Davidson and the other man shouldered the elderly man’s front door and admitted to having scoped out the residence and targeting the man. He also said that Davidson admitted to using the money he had stolen from the man to purchase drugs.

Rockel said that once the warrants for the alleged robbery come through, the other man who was with Davidson during the crime would also be arrested.

Rockel also referenced an earlier report from Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney C. Michael Sparks, who said that 90 to 95 percent of crime in the area is related to drugs.

The chief said that a total of five officers have participated in this case so far: Patrolman Jarrod Marcum issued the initial warrants for breaking and entering, Patrolmen Jeff Taylor III and Bert Gibson arrested Davidson, and Lt. G.P. Dotson and Sgt. J.E. Spence interviewed him, learning of the robbery.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Rockel said. “We’re working as a team. It’s good for the public.”

Davidson is currently lodged at the Southwestern Regional Jail, in Holden, on the charges that Marcum had initially issued a warrant for his arrest, nighttime burglary and petit larceny. However, more charges are pending, as warrants are being processed for his alleged robbery of the elderly man: strong-arm robbery and burglary.

This was not Davidson’s first run-in with the WPD. He was arrested back in September 2011 for being the Williamson Car Bandit, responsible for a string of car thefts that took place throughout the city.

Rockel said that for members of the public to protect themselves, they should always have their windows and doors locked, the outside of their homes illuminated, ideally by motion-detection, and to be observant of their surroundings.

“Williamson is not a bad place to be; it’s a safe place,” Rockel said. “But small-town America is gone. We sometimes have big city crime here.”
