Riverside parent has security concerns

WILLIAMSON — In the wake of the school shooting in Connecticut, school systems and parents are taking a hard look at the security in schools. Mingo County Schools have developed a Crisis Management Plan, which has stringent rules governing how people are admitted into the schools.

However, a parent at Riverside Elementary School said she witnessed a door left open, giving access to the building to anyone. There were no school personnel in sight at the entrance according to her.

In 2008, the West Virginia School Building Authority approved grant funding for the installation of controlled access entrances in all schools in Mingo County.

Each door to a school stays locked, and is equipped with an intercom/security camera system. When a visitor wants to enter the building, they must press a button and speak to a person inside the building, who unlocks the door.

However, when Bernadean Perry said she took her son to school on Monday, the very next school day after the atrocious events in Connecticut, she did not have to ask for permission to enter Riverside Elementary.

“There was a person, who I assume was school personnel, about 30-feet away from the front door,” Perry said. “I walked past her, and was about halfway up the walkway to the front door, when the door opened and a woman came out, propped it open with a wedge of wood. Then she turned around and went back in the building, leaving the door wide open.”

Perry said she took her fourth-grader in the school and saw the person who had opened the front door go into the office and sit down. She asked where the principal was, and was told she was on the phone.

Perry said she took her child into the school and left, at which time there were still no adults around the front door, which was still open.

“I thought to myself that that wasn’t right, and grabbed my cell phone and took a picture,” she said. Perry later posted that photo on a social media website.

The Daily News contacted Mingo County Superintendent Randy Keathley, who referred the matter to Riverside principal Paula Brown.

Brown said the door was left open in the morning as students were arriving, but that school personnel were always at the entrance.

“We always have an adult on duty at the front door,” Brown said. “Usually it is myself or the assistant principal.”

She said people who enter the school must be “buzzed in,” meaning they must use the intercom system to enter the building.

However, Perry said there was no adult at the front door Monday.

“There was no one there on duty,” Perry said. “Anyone could have walked into that school.”

The County-Wide Council on Productive and Safe Schools, which is made up of representatives from police agencies, Mingo County Emergency Services, Mingo County Public Defender’s and Prosecuting Attorney’s Ofñce, as well as employees of other state and local agencies and Mingo County Schools has developed a plan for each school designed to “ensure the safety of students and staff at that particular school,” according to a statement from Mingo County Schools.

“The County-Wide Council on Productive and Safe Schools works diligently to assist the school administrators with helpful information and professional knowledge to achieve readiness in an emergency situation,” a statement from Mingo County Schools Emergency Operators Officer Tom Damron said. “With the help and teamwork of the agencies mentioned, and the time dedicated by experienced and knowledgeable individuals, Mingo County Schools will continue to keep abreast of up-to-date security measures and interventions.”

I agree with Guest's comment little things can grow into be things fast.We are a little town but bad things that didnt happen here years ago Are happening now.So why wait till it does before we take action by then it is too late. There has been way to much abuse, neglect, and plain old turn the blind eye to situations in our school system lately.Williamson is concerned for her child safety

after the bus indecent on Friday the same day that all went on in Connecticut and then to go to the school with the lack luster of protection for everyone there she was scared for not only her child but for all the kids there.Sometimes bringing it out to the attention of the public change can and should happen. There are no sure fire way to protect anybody from a crazy person if they that determined to get somebody they will but lets not make it so easy for them.

I understand that the community wants to put taxes towards bettering education, but lives are more important at this point. I believe that tax money should go towards security within the schools, meaning to have security guards at all times along with walk through detectors. If they can afford all of this to protect people within federal facilities and courthouses then why not protect the children also by using the same methods? Violence obviously has become an issue for years and it is most deffinately getting worse. Something has to be done, especially to protect children who are going to school for an education without worry that they may not make it back home safely.

Not too long ago most people were throwing a fit over the schools locking the doors and keeping us parents out (I was one of them) Now since the tragic ordeal in Newtown we have parents trying their best to find a way into the school so they can exploit it. This is pathetic!! No school is perfect every second of the day. Give it a rest and let the schools figure out the things that need to be done to protect our children. Newtown had these protections in place and it failed. If a crazy person wants in they will get in and they don't need guns to cause the damage that was done. I worry about my children also but I'm sure the state and boards will do what they can in a reasonable time. But Rome wasn't built in a day. Sincerely Ward Griffith from Lenore, WV

Yes they had there protection plan in place and it worked. Newtown didnt have there doors wide open. This person had to shoot the window out to get in, therefore he had to make noise to get in. That alone saved several lives. When the teachers heard the gun shots they were able to lock there doors and hide there children. Sometimes you have to bring things like this out in the open to get peoples attention. Pathetic is leaving a door wide open for anyone to walk in especially after what happened on 12-14-12.

There is always an adult standing outside usually Mrs.Brown or Mr. Pyskowski I have had a child at Riverside since 2005 and have never witnessed the front door being propped open without an adult nearby. This parent that is complaining abt the door being left open is one of the same parents that complained that sometimes they have to wait to be buzzed in and I think that Williamson Daily News did a story based on one persons statement and 1 pic whose to say the teacher on duty wasn't standing behind her while she was taking pic

I took that picture and I am not afraid to say I took it. Let them rewind there video cameras they have set up and they will see the same thing I saw. I went to school on Monday to complain about what had happend on the bus on friday. A man got on my childs bus and would not get off. The police came and got the man off the bus and put him in the police car. When I went to the school the door was open for me to walk in with no adult at the door. And when I left the building the door was still open with no one at the door. And I have never complained about having to be buzzed in although I have wondered why no one comes to greet me at that door. All I have to say is, I am here for my child and they let me in. I can debate this as long as you like but the simple fact is I love my child and I want him to be safe. I didnt hide my name I could have but I didnt. What is your name?

And if the teacher on duty was standing behind me let them step foward and say so. And I will face them in it. I am not hiding. I stand behind what I say.
