BLACKBERRY, Ky. — A Williamson police officer who had been suspended without pay following a DUI arrest in Pike County, Ky., was found unresponsive at his parent’s home on Monday afternoon. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Jefferson (Jeff) Taylor III, 27, of Williamson, had been a patrolman with the Williamson City Police Department (WPD) for two years before his death. WPD Chief C.D. Rockel spoke with the Daily News concerning the death of the officer, saying that it was a tragic loss of life.

“This saddens me heart,” stated Rockel. “Our department has suffered a great loss and Jeff will be greatly missed, and hard to replace. He was a good officer.”

“My heart goes out to Jeff’s family and friends, and to each and every officer within this county who served with him. He made a lot of friends and his death will leave a definite void.”

According to reports from Pikeville Post 9 of the Kentucky State Police (KSP), in the early morning hours of April 30, Taylor, who was not on duty at the time, allegedly crashed his police cruiser into an electric pole in the Hardy Camp community, totaling the vehicle. He reportedly left the scene and was located approximately 2 hours after the accident occurred at the residence of a family member and was placed under arrest by a KSP trooper on charges of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident.

Taylor allegedly told the arresting officer that he had taken a prescription sleep aid and had consumed an alcoholic beverage/energy drink called Four Loko that has actually been banned in several states. Later he recanted this statement and told the trooper he had not taken any medication or consumed any alcohol, although the officer stated he detected the smell of alcohol on his breath. Taylor submitted to a blood toxicology screen, which the results of are still pending. The officer was removed from active duty and was suspended without pay pending the investigation results of the KSP and an internal investigation by the WPD.

Pike County Coroner Mike Hall pronounced Taylor dead and sent the body to Frankfort, Ky. for an autopsy. Taylor’s death is under investigation by KSP Detective Newsome. More information regarding this case will be released as they become available.

It's an absolute disgrace that the writer of this article does not have enough respect that jeff died, she has to try and smear his reputation just one more time.....no reason to bring up what happened..how about you talk about his good things and the drug dealers he helped take down. No you go and say the first thing about him getting a dui which still hasn't been proved. This is whats wrong with this paper and the articles you guys are 2 days late and full of lies. Just like anyone else that has been arrested you put that in the paper but don't put it in there when there not guilty or you made a mistake.....very disappointed in the news paper staff.....especially the writer you have been wrong many times before and you also never finish a story....if jeff's dui case becomes dismissed because he wasn't under the influence BET you don't write about it....please start getting facts write about local news before you write them..... only thing you guys get right is the news we seen on tv 3 days ago that you copy and put a few extra words in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shoot, she doesn't even get it right when she attempts to copy another story...never seen such poor grammar and punctuation used by supposed writers and journalist. The creditability of this paper is absolutely nonexistent. This paper should be closed or the staff be wiped out and start over as a satirical paper instead because they will never be taken seriously after the damage that this writer and (the others like her as well as the editor) of this paper have done. I could possibly overlook all of that, but I cannot overlook the poor taste and lack morals this staff displays on the daily. It is such a disgrace to not just their "victims", but our community as a whole. As awful as this paper is seen by the people of this community, who live here and know that we have much more intelligent, professional, and credible people who would do this paper justice, if the paper were staffed based on ability to perform the job in which you carry the title instead of the job you have because a favor was owed, or you know this one or that one or well, you know the saying...Can you imagine how outsiders react to seeing this? If this is the best we have, we should just give it up...it's a total embarrassment. I read posts on Facebook daily written in haste and anger yet still with better writing quality than I have seen exhibited by the Williamson Daily News in a very long time. I would be so embarrassed to show my face if I were the author of these failed "stories".
