Farmer’s Market plans seasonal festivities

Special to the Daily News

The Williamson Farmer’s Market is committed to keeping fresh produce available throughout October this year. This timing will allow Mingo County seniors to use Farmers Market Senior Vouchers before the vouchers expire at the end of the month. The market has also announced some fall activities that are fun for the whole family.

This weekend, the market will offer a wide-variety of seasonal vegetables, including fresh picked and dried potatoes, grown locally. Shoppers can also find locally grown green onions, garlic, tomatoes, mustard greens and a variety of apples. Additionally, farmers have begun harvesting fall gourds, squash and pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. The market also displays fodder shock and hay—all ideal and timely for decorating this Halloween.

On October 13, kids of all ages are invited to the Pumpkin Carving where everyone can share ideas for the best designs. Pumpkins will be available for purchase, and there will also be some carving tools available for use at our pumpkin carving station.

Although this season is coming to an end, winter crops will be here before we know it. A plethora of hardy greens and peas were recently planted in the high tunnel at the Williamson Community Gardens, and these crops will be ready for harvest within the next couple of weeks for purchase at the market.

Information on future markets will be available on Facebook, at www.facebook.com/WilliamsonFarmersMarket, so be sure to follow us for the updates on all available winter crops as the season progresses.

Now Ive heard it all!! WOW! Who funds this? Or better yet who decides if programs like this get funding. Honestly there are homeless living under a bridge a few blocks from here, and im sure the need food and clothing and shelter. And you all are blowing down dogs mouths and its probably costing more to do that than to do for the homeless!! Ilove animals, but i love me fellow man even more.
