PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The Pike County Grade School Spelling Bee was recently held and crowned a very familiar grand champion.
For the fifth consecutive year, Emily Keaton, an eighth-grader from Christ Central Training School and Academy,took home the grand championship in the county competition and will advance to state competition, which she has also won for the past two years.
Keaton, 13, also won first place in her grade level and ended her grade school career with a perfect run in the county spelling bees. She is the daughter of Andy and Jill Keaton of Pikeville.
Taking first runner-up for the second year in a row and winner on the seventh grade level was Ewa Sulicz, 12, of Pikeville Junior High, daughter of Adam and Katarzyna Sulicz of Pikeville. Over-all second runner-up and winner on the sixth grade level was J.T. Mills, 12, of Belfry Middle School, a son of Paul and Terri Mills of Hardy.
The winning coach was Christ Central’s Brandi Anderson.

Fourth: winner — Johnathan Bryant, Christ Central; runner-up — Brantley Johnson, Valley; Fifth: winner — Dailey Prater, Majestic; runner-up — Lakin Puckett, Elkhorn City; Sixth: runner-up — Miracle Thacker, Millard Middle; Seventh: runner-up — Ethan Wells, Elkhorn City; Eighth: runner-up — Emily Chaney, Kimper.
The competition was between Pike County, Pikeville Independent and Christ Central Schools. Tonia Hopson, Instructional Supervisor for Pike County Schools, served as moderator and judge, along with other judges Judy Braham and Rosalind Stanley. Kelli Thompson served as pronouncer. Spelling Bee assistants included Connie Tackett and Tammy Ratliff.
